Fourth of July Sales

New labels for espolon tequila

New labels for Espolon tequila show Mexican scenes

Many tequilas are on sale through the Fourth (this Monday). Turns out, there is such a  thing called Fiscal Year-End, around the 30th of June, which causes some of my sellers to make outrageous deals with hard-to-place liquor to fill their quotas. All to our good. I am able to offer good prices for special events and you are able to buy some things at Front Range pricing (or much better, even).

Jose Cuervo Platino – about 40 bucks (usually 55 or 60). Comes in a blue, wooden box and is easily one of the best silver tequilas you can buy.

Espolon Reposado – 25.99

Corazon Blanco in a wooden box with 4 shot glasses is on sale.

Don Julio Blanco – about $45 instead of $55.

Plus, many others to try at special, lower prices. But only through 9 pm on the Fourth of July, 2011.

Also on sale, Bud, Coors, Corona, New Belgium, Ska, and bottles of wine (all bottles).

Chocolate Amaretto Bundt Cake

Cross section of double chocolate amaretto bundt cake with glaze

Eat this! - Double Chocolate Amaretto

I thought I’d start this project whereby I occasionally bake cakes and hand out samples to customers. Liquor-spiked cakes. Beyond the blatant attempt to get you to visit the store in eager anticipation (Pavlov, anyone?) and buy more product (I wish!), I just really like cake and any excuse is a good excuse to bake one.

The first trial was successful and we had people very happy to get a shot of sugar before heading home with a six pack. It was an amaretto-spiked, double chocolate cake with chocolate chips. Most people think of amaretto (almond-flavored liqueur) as a winter-time drink, or a spirit for mixing. I think this cake will make you think twice about the necessity of having a bottle in your cupboard, next to Jack.

So here it is, and note that it was baked at 6000 ft. so the recipe has been altered to fit the elevation.

Double Chocolate Amaretto Cake

  • 1 Betty Crocker Super Moist Chocolate Fudge Cake Mix
  • 3 eggs
  • 2 T. cornstarch
  • 1/2 c. oil
  • 3/4 c. sour cream
  • 1/4 c. mayonnaise
  • 1/2 c. amaretto (OR water)
  • 1 tsp. almond extract1 c.
  • mini chocolate chips

Glaze:

  • 1 c. powdered sugar
  • 2 – 4 T. amaretto
  • water and lemon juice as needed to taste
(Mix glaze ingredients together until smooth.)

Mix cake mix, cornstarch, eggs, oil, sour cream, mayonnaise, amaretto and almond extract for 30 seconds on low speed and 2 minutes on medium speed (until batter is smooth). Stir in chocolate chips.

Grease a Bundt pan (about 12 cup size) and sprinkle it with cocoa instead of flour. Pour batter in evenly and smooth top.

Place in a cold oven. Turn oven on to 350 degrees F. Bake for 50 to 60 minutes, or until cake tester comes out clean and cake pulls back slightly from sides.

Let cake rest for 5 minutes, then turn out of pan to cool. Stir together glaze and apply to warm cake. Let cool, then slice and eat.

Budweiser and the Fourth

Budweiser six packs with Stars and Stripes

Budweiser six packs with Stars and Stripes

Budweiser has a way with advertising. Who can forget the frogs burping out “Bud” “Weis” “Er” like some college frat boys? Or the iconic Clydesdale? Which reminds me – things are so tight this year, I didn’t receive a Clydesdale calendar! What is this world coming to?

So I am not surprised but it still tickles me to see their summer beer can display the patriotic theme of Stars and Stripes – with a red pull tab.

The can is beautiful: eye-catching, bright but not garish, and practically a collector’s item. Because when it’s gone, it’s gone.

I goaded the Coors guy by showing him the can and asking him, “now isn’t that a great idea?” His response was to tell me I should really have added Boulder Beer’s Hazed and Infused in the 12 pack can because that was real beauty. Argh! He’s the same one who swore that all new and improved “Schlitz” would sell. Can’t you just admit that the guy has better pecs than you?

Anyway, the 24 packs (also with the pretty cans) will be on sale through the 19th of June and then the 1st through the 4th of July – Bud and Bud Light – for $19.49. Reg. $22 something.

Corona is going on sale 25th June through the 4th July, and Ska and New Belgium products will as well.

Wines under $10 5% off / Over $10 – 10% off – 1st through 4th of July.

Keep cool with cold beer!
